The Verner Scarlett 5V is an ideal combination of power and weight for a direct drive, air-cooled radial. The Verner 5V can take the place of a traditional boxer VW: you save serious weight while making about the same horsepower, gaining the torque that 2640cc of displacement gets you. No bored and stroked 4 cylinder can match that. By taking the lightweight design of the 3V and adding an extra 2 cylinders, Verner has filled a vital niche for many aircraft, and in a form factor that looks irresistible, and sounds like a classic airplane should.
The Scarlett 5V uses a Walbro diaphragm type carburetor, distributing to all 5 cylinders and will take both auto & aviation fuels. The electric starter is optional, and easily installed or removed. As with all Scarlett engines, the oil is a dry-sump system with return from the lower cylinders and the bottom of the case, and ignition is controlled by computer and fired by individual ignition coils. The crankcase is cast magnesium for strength and low weight.
